Plug-in solar batteries: compatibility and buying checks

Why the new socket-connected solar rules do not automatically cover battery products, and what to ask when comparing storage options.

By Published Updated Checked 4 min read

Plug-in solar batteries need a different assessment from a solar-only device. A retailer using the words battery ready has not necessarily included storage or established an approved connection route. Before comparing capacity or price, identify the exact battery arrangement and who is responsible for assessing and connecting it.

Do not assume that approval for a plug-in solar kit also approves a battery configuration. Identify how the complete system connects and which rules cover it.

The new approval route has a defined scope

The government's plug-in solar consultation outcome states that the interim specification is for plug-in solar products and does not extend to other plug-in technologies such as batteries. The final specification also excludes plug-in solar devices integrated with battery systems.

That distinction matters when an advertisement uses broad terms such as balcony solar, home energy kit or battery-ready. A description of what a product can technically connect to does not establish that the proposed configuration is covered by the GB socket-connected solar route.

Ask what the battery is intended to power

Start by asking the seller to describe the complete connection arrangement in plain language. Is the proposal a socket-connected solar device, a professionally installed home-storage system, or a portable product supplying appliances independently?

Do not treat those descriptions as interchangeable when comparing prices. Ask for the rules, installation work and documentation that apply to the specific arrangement. Never use a portable power product to feed a household socket unless that exact use is expressly authorised and compliant; do not improvise connection cables.

Already have solar or a home battery?

Send the existing system's make, model and installation documents to the proposed supplier. Ask for written confirmation of compatibility and what professional checks are needed. Do not assume a generic yes or no covers every existing system.

A response should address the complete setup rather than just whether two products share a brand. Keep the current installer involved where a change affects the system they supplied, its warranty or its connection arrangements.

Questions for a meaningful storage comparison

Our suggested questions help keep an optional extra from being mistaken for a complete battery-inclusive offer. They are not a compatibility assessment; the supplier needs to answer for the exact equipment and property.

  • Is the battery included in the quoted price or merely compatible with the product?
  • What usable storage capacity and power output are being offered?
  • What installation, approvals and electrical work are included?
  • What warranty conditions, operating limits and exclusions apply?
  • Does the savings estimate include the battery cost and any replacement assumptions?

Choose the route before comparing the price

If storage is essential, make that clear in the comparison rather than choosing a cheap solar-only kit and assuming it can be upgraded. Compare a complete storage proposal with other complete proposals. If a seller cannot explain the compliant connection route, resolve that before paying, even when the headline offer appears attractive.

Plug-in solar batteries: compare the extra benefit, not the whole saving

First establish an appropriate connection route for the complete proposal. The calculation below is not approval to add a battery to a socket kit. It is a purchasing worksheet for a storage arrangement that has already been assessed as suitable.

Ask for two quotations on the same assumptions: solar without storage, and the proposed system with storage. If the second costs more, the relevant benefit is the additional saving produced by storage, not the saving already provided by the solar panels.

  • These calculations assume the saving persists and exclude finance, replacement and the time value of money.
  • Ask separately about usable capacity, output power, warranted life and backup capability; they describe different things.
  • If the supplier only supplies a combined savings figure, ask for the solar-only baseline before deciding.
Fictional storage comparison, not a tariff or generation forecast
InputIllustrative value
Extra installed cost of storage£1,200
Additional annual bill saving after losses, foregone export income and running costs£80
Simple payback on the extra cost£1,200 ÷ £80 = 15 years
If that additional saving were only £40£1,200 ÷ £40 = 30 years

Common questions

Do the solar-only plug-in rules approve integrated batteries?

No. The current interim specification excludes plug-in solar devices integrated with battery storage. A seller must explain the applicable route for its complete proposal; do not infer approval from the solar panel or inverter brand. Read the exact product documentation before treating it as a socket-connected option. Plug-in solar UK rules: what is legal in 2026?.

Should I buy a battery because I am out during the day?

Not on that fact alone. Ask for the solar-only case and the additional cost and benefit of storage separately. The amount of surplus, when you need electricity, system compatibility and the battery proposal all matter. A household label is a starting question, not a battery sizing calculation. Why daytime electricity use matters for plug-in solar.
