How to register plug-in solar and check your device

Understand the difference between checking a product on the ENA register and registering the device you will use at home.

By Published Updated Checked 4 min read

To register plug-in solar, you need to know which complete device you are using. Checking a manufacturer's product record and registering your household device are different tasks. Neither substitutes for checking the property and connection. Follow the order below so you do not mistake a listing or a form submission for a safety assessment.

A manufacturer's device listing and your household registration are two different checks. Completing one does not automatically complete the other.

First, identify the complete product

Ask the seller for the device manufacturer, full model name, supplied components and the matching ENA register reference. Keep the original listing or quotation so you can compare it with what arrives.

If a seller gives only the panel brand or inverter name, ask them to identify the complete device being offered. Similar names, different panel combinations and different kit variants are reasons to resolve the identity before ordering, not reasons to guess.

Check compliance, not just the presence of a listing

The final product specification requires manufacturers to register devices on the ENA Type Test Register and obtain confirmation that they are assessed as compliant before marketing them. A submission alone is explicitly not proof of compliance.

Use the official register linked below to check the exact entry and its current status. If you cannot reconcile the seller's kit with a compliant entry, ask the manufacturer to clarify it. This article does not certify any named product.

Register your own device before use

Energy Saving Trust says household devices must be registered before use and directs users to UK Plug-in Solar Registration. Its preparation list includes your name, postcode and the device make and model.

Use the official service, follow its current prompts and retain the confirmation. Do not assume that ordering online, registering a warranty or appearing in our comparison has completed this step. We do not submit device registrations for you.

What to do if something does not match

If the paperwork, label or service instructions are unclear, stop and resolve that discrepancy with the supplier or registration service before connecting the device. Do not substitute a similar model to get past a form. For an existing installation, a changed address or a different electrical arrangement, ask what applies to that specific situation.

  • Record the question and the exact model it concerns.
  • Keep the supplier's response alongside the product instructions.
  • Save any registration reference and the date of confirmation.
  • Keep permission, safety and export-payment decisions separate from registration.

Register plug-in solar: keep the right records together

Make one folder for your own installation records. Save confirmations actually received, not just screenshots of an unsubmitted form. Where a seller uses a different marketing name from the device documentation, resolve that mismatch before proceeding. Do not guess a model from a similar-looking product in a register.

Common questions

Does buying through this comparison site register my device?

No. Comparing offers does not submit a household registration or a supplier order. Follow the relevant registration process yourself and keep its confirmation. A shortlist, supplier enquiry or purchase receipt has a different purpose and should not be treated as a registration certificate. Plug-in solar UK rules: what is legal in 2026?.

What should I do if the model names do not match?

Ask the seller to explain the relationship in writing using the complete device identifier and supporting documents. A brand-level match is not enough. Pause the purchase or connection decision until the exact model is clear rather than selecting the closest name in a list. What should a complete plug-in solar kit include?.
