Solar warranties, returns and after-sales support: what to compare

Look beyond a long warranty headline and understand the practical questions about faults, labour, collection and cancellation.

By Published Updated Checked 4 min read

Solar warranties are useful only when you understand the promise and how to claim on it. A long panel warranty may not describe inverter cover, labour or the cost of gaining access. Compare a realistic fault scenario across suppliers and keep statutory consumer rights separate from optional commercial guarantees.

Compare what happens when something goes wrong, not only the number of years printed beside the word warranty.

Ask which promise covers which problem

Ask the seller to separate equipment defects, any stated panel-performance promise and installation workmanship. Request the actual terms for each, including the responsible business, covered models, duration and claim process. Do not assume a panel warranty covers the inverter or installation labour.

Use a concrete scenario: if the device stops working in year three, who diagnoses it, who pays to remove it, and who handles the replacement? A supplier should be able to point to the relevant terms rather than repeating a headline warranty length.

A warranty does not replace consumer rights

GOV.UK explains that statutory rights remain separate from warranties. For most consumer goods ordered online, cancellation can normally be notified within 14 days of receipt, with another 14 days to return them. Exceptions and rules about handling apply; installed services and bespoke orders need particular care.

Ask about the return address, collection arrangements and charges before purchase. Do not assume a large panel can be returned through an ordinary parcel service or that installation is a risk-free trial. For a dispute, seek consumer advice about your particular contract.

Check protection for an installed project

RECC requires its members to protect deposits, advance payments and workmanship warranties against the installer ceasing to trade. That does not mean every solar seller or retail kit carries this protection.

For an applicable installation, ask for the provider, policy documents, registration confirmation and exclusions. A company displaying a membership logo is not itself your insurance certificate. Match the business on the quotation to the named contracting party.

Test the support route before placing an order

Send one specific question about your proposed configuration. Note whether the response answers it, names the correct product and explains the next step. This is a practical service check, not a statistically reliable rating of the company.

Keep the quotation, order confirmation, serial numbers, instructions and written promises together. A clear record makes it easier to request help later and to distinguish the seller from a manufacturer, marketplace or subcontractor.

Solar warranties: ask who pays at each stage

Send the same hypothetical fault to each supplier: the system stops producing and needs diagnosis. Ask for the relevant terms against every stage below. Do not fill a gap with an assumption that everything is free, and do not treat this worksheet as a statement of your legal entitlement in a particular dispute.

Common questions

Does an expired warranty mean I have no consumer rights?

Not necessarily. GOV.UK distinguishes legal rights from warranties and guarantees. The relevant remedy depends on the facts and applicable rules, not only the warranty expiry date. Keep proof of purchase and seek consumer advice about the specific fault and contract rather than assuming the seller's warranty wording settles everything. How to compare solar installation quotes fairly.

Is a workmanship warranty the same as panel cover?

Do not assume so. Ask for the terms for installation work and each equipment category separately. Confirm the responsible business and any insurance-backed protection that applies. A long equipment headline does not explain who pays to put right an installation problem or remove equipment to inspect it. What should a complete plug-in solar kit include?.
